Seventeen

"Jon," Sapale screamed as she threw herself against the closed portal interface. She slammed it so hard, she was thrown several meters backwards and sprawled onto the ground.

As quickly and ferociously as a tiger, she leapt to her feet and charged back. This was to be her fifth impact with the unyielding barrier. She planned on continuing to impale it until one of them broke. She did not care much which one it would be.

Six.

Seven.

Eight.

After the ninth crash, she felt her lead shoulder crack. As she walked away for her eleventh charge, she tried lifting that arm. Nothing. She'd snapped something. Oh well. She'd just have to switch to the other shoulder for the next collision.

Just as she was about to launch, something in her pocket shook or vibrated. She stood up and felt the area. Oh yeah, the four necumplacks. She'd stuffed the oversized-hotdog-bun-sized blobs there after Jon tossed them up to her, back on the other side. She'd forgotten all about them in her fury.

"What'd you want, little fellas?"

But there was no response. One—it was probably just one—did squirm a little bit, but that was all.

"I don't have time for charades, little dude. If you can't tell me your beef, hang on tight 'cause we're about to break something else."

Sapale drew herself up and began her next assault.

A squawk like a klaxon erupted from her pocket. She relaxed and reached in. She not-too-gently pulled the four of them out at once. Disregarding which end she was addressing, she held the lump of goo up to her face. "What? I'm kind of busy here."

There was a softer squawk from the far side of the necumplack on the bottom of the stack.

She rearranged the bodies so that one was facing in her direction. "What, little pest? If you can talk or something, please do so quickly. Otherwise, I'll have to check back with you later."

The necumplack wriggled fiercely, then began making the sound again, only this time, it was modulated and much softer.

"I don't have time for a song, my friend. Here," she bent down, "you guys rest here while I try and talk some sense into this phase portal."

Before she was halfway down, the necumplack squirmed and squealed inconsolably.

"Little dude, seriously. The longer we play Twenty Questions, the more solid that there barrier's likely to become. What? Speak now or hold your peace until I'm in pieces on the floor."

Its reaction was to modulate the noise it made further. It was sounding more regular to her ear. Then it hit Sapale. The necumplack was trying to speak.

"Do you speak English?"

More regular but unintelligible noises.

"Do you speak Hirn? Any Kaljaxian dialects?" she asked in her native tongue.

She heard only more disjointed squeaks.

"How about Valley Girl Speak? If not, like, bag your face while I do some damage, you grody noid. Take a chill pill or whatever."

More modulated sounds. They were maybe a bit less random.

"You're doing groovy. I'm just going to put you here while I get back to frantically trying to save my brood-mate.
